Tips for big snow storms
Preparing for a snow storm
Large snow storms can put significant strain on your equipment and schedule. Use this guide to ensure you're prepared to successfully complete your route and maximize your earnings.
1. Inspect your equipment
Big storms are rarely a surprise. Use the days leading up to to the storm to ensure your truck and equipment are in top shape. Addressing issues early prevents catastrophic failures that could take your crew out of action on service day.
We recommend inspecting the following:
Fluids: Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and transfer case/differential fluids.
Systems: Inspect fluid lines, batteries, and wiring harnesses.
Suspension: Check shocks, struts, and leaf springs for wear.
2. Have backup equipment ready
Even well-maintained equipment can fail. Plan for the unexpected by having backup blowers or trucks ready to swap in.
Stock wear items: Keep common replacement parts like snow blower lines or shear pins on hand.
Local options: Identify nearby hardware stores that carry equipment you use so you can quickly replace a failed tool while on your route.
3. Adjust tire pressure for traction
If you need extra grip in heavy snow, consider slightly lowering your tire pressure to increase the tire's footprint.
AT Tires: Can typically go as low as 22 PSI.
All-Season Tires: We recommend staying about 26 PSI.
Note: Remember to reflate your tires once the storm work is finished to maintain your fuel efficiency and tire health.
